European Union discusses potential expansion of Operation Aspides
EU foreign ministers met in Brussels to discuss the security of maritime navigation in the Middle East, specifically addressing the Strait of Hormuz. High Representative Kaja Kallas confirmed that while there is strong support to strengthen the current Operation Aspides in the Red Sea, member states have expressed no desire to expand its mandate to the Strait of Hormuz at this time. Kallas emphasized that European nations remain reluctant to become actively involved in regional military conflicts, stating that this is not Europe's war. The discussions remain at a preliminary stage, focusing on diplomatic initiatives and mapping options for safeguarding commercial shipping. Concerns were raised regarding the potential economic impact of a closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which facilitates one-fifth of global oil and gas trade. Kallas mentioned potential comparisons to the Black Sea grain initiative to ensure stability. No formal decision to expand the military mandate has been made, as member states prioritize de-escalation.
