Funeral held for Cypriot soldier Nikos Violaris, missing since 1974
President Nikos Christodoulides attended the funeral of Nikos Violaris, a soldier who had been missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The ceremony took place in Kalo Chorio Oreinis in Klirou, the soldier's place of origin. Violaris, who was 18 years old at the time of his disappearance, served in the 70th Engineer Battalion based at the BMH camp in Nicosia. He was last seen on August 6, 1974, during the Turkish military offensive. During his eulogy, President Christodoulides emphasized that current regional instability highlights the dangers of unresolved conflicts. He stated that the government remains committed to seeking a resolution to the Cyprus issue and ending the occupation. The President framed these efforts as a responsibility toward future generations to ensure a safe, reunified country. He reiterated that Cyprus seeks to be part of a regional solution rather than a source of further conflict.
