Tufan Erhurman criticizes foreign military presence in Cyprus
Tufan Erhurman, a Turkish Cypriot political leader, has publicly criticized the military alliances and agreements established by the Republic of Cyprus. He described these efforts as an unrealistic attempt to create a military counterbalance against Turkey. Erhurman argued that increased military activity, including the presence of assets from Greece, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and British bases, undermines the security of the entire island. He stated that this military buildup involves the Turkish Cypriot community without their consent and negatively impacts the tourism and economic sectors. Furthermore, he noted that international media reports labeling Cyprus as an unsafe destination are a logical outcome of these regional tensions. In his statement, he referenced an article by Niyazi Kizilyurek, which highlighted a past speech by former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. The reference suggests that the implementation of the Annan Plan would have historically prevented Greece from deploying naval and air assets to the island.
