Tufan Erhurman criticizes Republic of Cyprus military alliances

Turkish Cypriot politician Tufan Erhurman has publicly criticized the military alliances and agreements established by the Republic of Cyprus. He characterized these efforts as an unrealistic attempt to create a military counterweight against Turkey. Erhurman argued that increased military activity on the island, including the presence of forces from Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands, threatens regional security. He also expressed concern regarding the impact of these developments on the tourism sector and the economy, noting that international reports depicting Cyprus as an unsafe destination are predictable. The statement referenced the use of British bases and the Andreas Papandreou Air Base. Furthermore, Erhurman cited an article by Niyazi Kizilyurek, which recalled a statement by former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras regarding the Annan Plan. Samaras had previously suggested that the implementation of the Annan Plan would have prevented Greece from deploying warships and aircraft to the island. Erhurman claimed these developments implicate the Turkish Cypriot community in security situations without their consent.
