Andrea Kimi Antonelli to join Mercedes F1 team
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, born in Bologna in September 2006 and son of race driver Marco Antonelli, has been confirmed as a driver for Mercedes in Formula 1. Antonelli joined the Mercedes Junior Team in April 2019 at age 12, following a successful karting career that included CIK-FIA European Championship titles in 2020 and 2021. He transitioned to single-seaters in 2022, securing championships in Italian F4, ADAC F4, Formula Regional Middle East, and FRECA. In 2024, he competed in Formula 2 with Prema Racing, finishing 6th and becoming the youngest driver to secure two F2 race victories. His promotion follows the announcement in February 2024 that Lewis Hamilton would join Ferrari for the 2025 season. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff facilitated the decision to promote the young Italian to the senior squad. Antonelli represents a broader trend of rejuvenation within the Formula 1 grid.
