Prominent Cypriot chef Andreas Mavrommatis passes away
Andreas Mavrommatis, a renowned Cypriot chef and pioneer of Mediterranean cuisine in France, has died. Born in the village of Agios Ioannis Pitsilias, he moved to Paris in 1977 to study sociology and psychology before shifting his focus to gastronomy. Together with his brothers, Evagoras and Dionysios, he opened a delicatessen in the 5th arrondissement of Paris in 1981, which later evolved into a chain of restaurants. Mavrommatis was the first Cypriot chef to be awarded a Michelin star for his restaurant, Maison Mavrommatis. His work was widely recognized for elevating Cypriot and Greek culinary traditions on the international stage. Various political figures in Cyprus, including the President and the Speaker of the House, have expressed their condolences and praised his contribution to bilateral relations between Cyprus and France. His career trajectory is credited with inspiring future generations of chefs and promoting the Mediterranean diet globally.
