Justice Minister provides update on Cyprus security during Middle East tensions
Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris addressed public concerns regarding regional security following the escalation of conflicts involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Fytiris stated that the Republic of Cyprus remains a regional stability factor and a humanitarian hub, emphasizing that the state has effective mechanisms to protect citizens and infrastructure. He credited the lack of terrorist attacks on the island to systematic preventive work by the police and intelligence services, which remain on high alert. The Minister noted that President Nikos Christodoulides initiated the deployment of surveillance and deterrence assets from European partners to strengthen national security. Additionally, Fytiris announced that preparations for a specialized unit to combat organized crime, described as a 'Cypriot FBI', are in the final stages. He also detailed plans for prison reform, specifically rejecting temporary solutions in favor of constructing a new modern correctional facility and separate detention centers for minors. The Ministry confirmed that contingency plans are continuously updated in accordance with regional developments.
