Cyprus health minister addresses rare disease conference

On Saturday, Cyprus Health Minister Neophytos Charalampidis addressed a conference organized by the 'Unique Smiles' association regarding early intervention for children with rare genetic diseases. As Cyprus currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, the minister emphasized the promotion of a resilient EU pharmaceutical policy focused on innovation and equitable access. Charalampidis stated that Cyprus's participation in European Reference Networks for rare diseases facilitates cross-border collaboration and better access to specialized care. The government has been implementing a National Strategy for rare diseases since 2012, which is currently undergoing revision to align with modern scientific standards. Furthermore, the minister noted that the General Healthcare System (GeSY) and coordinated efforts by the Health Insurance Organization and Pharmaceutical Services ensure access to orphan drugs approved by the European Medicines Agency. He concluded by acknowledging patient advocacy groups as essential partners in defending the rights of those living with rare conditions.
