Cypriot parliamentary parties propose property foreclosure suspension measures
Cypriot political parties are debating new measures to suspend property foreclosures until the end of the year, citing the Middle East conflict as a contributing factor. The Disy party proposes extending the protection of primary residences from 350,000 to 400,000 euros and introducing protections for loan guarantors. Dipa suggests a freeze on foreclosures for residences valued up to 350,000 euros. The Diko party has proposed the appointment of specialized judges to handle foreclosure cases. Averof Neofytou of Disy argues that these measures are constitutional and provide a legal framework for loan write-downs. Aristos Damianou of the Akel party stated that his party has submitted 35 legislative proposals since 2014 to protect borrowers and guarantors. The debate highlights competing interests regarding banking regulations and the protection of borrowers before the upcoming parliamentary elections.
