Students participate in dry stone masonry workshop at the presidential palace
A one-day practical workshop on dry stone masonry was held at the presidential palace gardens in Nicosia. The event was organized by the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, led by Antonia Theodosiou. Participants included first-year students from the Architecture and Civil Engineering department and second-year structural design students from the First Technical and Vocational School of Education and Training in Nicosia. Instructors from the Post-secondary Institutes of Vocational Education and Training (MIEEK) were also in attendance. The session began with a briefing from Commissioner Theodosiou on the cultural and environmental significance of dry stone architecture in Cyprus. The workshop focused on the practical application of building structures without mortar. The technique is promoted as a method to prevent soil erosion, manage rainwater runoff, and foster local biodiversity by creating micro-ecosystems. Students participated in the construction and restoration of stone sections under professional supervision.
