Cyprus electricity authority workers announce three-hour work stoppage
Employees of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) will hold a three-hour work stoppage on March 18 from 8:00 to 11:00. This industrial action follows a previous two-hour strike on February 27. The trade unions announced their decision in a public letter to the EAC board of directors. Workers are protesting against what they describe as a lack of state strategic planning, unresolved operational problems, and ineffective government policies in the energy sector. The unions specifically criticized state initiatives that they claim are unrealistic, lead to a fiasco, and increase electricity costs for consumers. They warned of further escalation if their concerns regarding electricity supply, consumer support, and access to solar energy are not addressed by the government. The workers also expressed prior opposition to plans that might allow the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta) to enter the energy market.
