EU leaders to convene in Brussels for summit on geopolitical and economic issues
European Council President Antonio Costa has invited leaders of the 27 EU member states to a summit in Brussels scheduled for March 19. The agenda encompasses the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, European defense, and the competitiveness of the European economy. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been invited to attend, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to address the assembly. Costa emphasized that the military escalation in the Middle East is creating global instability with direct consequences for Europe. Discussions will specifically address the situation in Iran, energy prices, and overall energy security. Leaders aim to identify tools for a coordinated response to protect citizens and businesses while working toward regional de-escalation. The summit also intends to establish a new strategic agenda focused on long-term economic competitiveness.
