Akrotiri schools resume operations following lift of evacuation order

Schools in the Akrotiri community reopened on Monday, March 16, 2026, following the lifting of an evacuation order by the Interior Ministry. Education Minister Athena Michaelidou visited the area on Saturday to oversee safety assessments, including the structural and seismic integrity of school buildings. While daily routines have largely resumed, a preparedness drill for students and teachers is scheduled for Wednesday at the Akrotiri Elementary School to practice emergency procedures, such as responding to sirens. Civil Defence teams remain in the area as a precaution to assist residents if needed. Parents’ Association President Polina Argyrou noted that two classrooms have been identified as potential temporary shelters. Kourion Mayor Pantelis Georgiou stated that child psychologists will support students, and authorities are developing comprehensive evacuation plans. Despite the lifting of the official evacuation order, the area remains on high alert following a 14-minute siren activation on Friday which caused concern among residents.
