Kourion municipality plans to build aquarium and research centre at Akrotiri

The municipality of Kourion has proposed the construction of a marine aquarium and Mediterranean research centre on the western side of the Akrotiri peninsula. The project is estimated to cost approximately 10 million euros. Local authorities have formally requested to lease a 16,000 square metre plot of land from the British Bases administration, located south of the St. George chapel. Mayor Pantelis Georgiou confirmed that initial discussions with British Base representatives were positive. The municipal authorities are currently preparing a preliminary inquiry for the Limassol District Local Government Organisation to establish the necessary parameters for an upcoming architectural competition. The facility aims to study local biodiversity, including Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows and the Akrotiri salt lake ecosystem. Additionally, the research centre is expected to address ongoing coastal erosion issues in the region.
