Uncertainty regarding Cyprus aerial firefighting readiness for 2026

Cyprus faces potential gaps in its aerial firefighting capabilities for the 2026 season due to legal and geopolitical obstacles. Additionally, two helicopters expected from Jordan on March 1, 2026, have been delayed by the conflict in Iran. The successful bidder has notified Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas that they may reconsider their standby commitment if the contractual issues are not resolved immediately. Furthermore, two aircraft assigned to the EU mechanism remain subject to availability for other member states in need. These conditions occur in the context of previous lethal wildfires that resulted in two fatalities last year.
