Polish national arrested for espionage at Souda naval base

Police in Souda, Crete, arrested a 58-year-old Polish national on Thursday on charges of espionage at the Souda naval base. Authorities allege the suspect had been living in a van in the Marathi area for three years and was observed photographing ships at the base to transmit the images to Poland. The suspect denies all allegations, and police have seized his mobile phone and other electronic devices for forensic analysis. The Greek Intelligence Service (EYP) has been notified of the ongoing investigation. This incident follows the arrest of a Georgian national earlier this month, who was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 5,000 euros for illegal entry and residency, while a separate counter-terrorism investigation into potential espionage remains pending. Furthermore, a third individual, a citizen of Azerbaijan, was arrested in June for espionage at the same location and remains in custody. Reports conflict on whether the suspect was observed showing photos to residents or if he was transmitting them directly to Poland.
