Transfer of Civil Defense Director Maria Papa to the Audit Office
The Ministry of the Interior has initiated the transfer of Civil Defense Director Maria Papa to the Audit Office, a move expected to be finalized following approval by the Public Service Commission (PSC). Maria Papa, a certified accountant, is slated to join the Financial Audit Directorate of the Audit Office. While official government sources describe the transfer as a routine administrative procedure agreed upon by the Ministry and the Audit Office, media reports link the decision to a recent controversy regarding the condition of civil defense shelters. It was revealed that 200 shelters are unsuitable for use, while another 230 are no longer available due to property conversions. Previously, reports indicated that Director Papa had provided written assurances to the Ministry's General Director, Ellikos Elias, and Minister Constantinos Ioannou regarding the readiness and maintenance of these facilities, which were later contradicted by onsite inspections. Following the transfer, an acting director will be appointed to lead the Civil Defense department.
