Cyprus parliament updates legislation for contract soldiers and non-commissioned officers

The Cyprus House of Representatives unanimously passed legislation amending the National Guard law to extend the employment age limit for contract soldiers (SYOP) from 42 to 57 years. This change allows contract soldiers to renew their employment contracts until they reach age 57, aiming to retain experienced personnel within the National Guard. Additionally, new regulations were approved to allow contract soldiers to transition into contract non-commissioned officers (SYP) with the rank of sergeant. Eligibility for this transition requires at least 10 years of service and success in an evaluation process, with the maximum rank attainable being staff sergeant. The Ministry of Defense, led by Vasilis Palmas, stated that 250 positions for contract non-commissioned officers will be filled in 2026. Previous service years will be credited toward pension benefits under the 2022 legislation. These reforms are part of a broader strategy to improve professional conditions and maintain operational readiness within the armed forces.
