Carina Edlinger reveals trauma following 2022 Beijing Games

27-year-old Czech para-athlete Carina Edlinger revealed in an interview with Forbes Austria that she was a victim of severe physical abuse and rape two weeks before the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympics. Despite this trauma, she competed and won a gold medal, which she states she has not looked at since the event. Following the Games, Edlinger underwent 14 weeks of treatment in a psychiatric clinic to cope with the experience. During the current Winter Paralympics in Italy, she secured a silver medal while competing with a neck brace due to spinal disc herniations diagnosed shortly before the competition. She also addressed her financial struggles as a professional athlete, noting that they have forced her to return to living in her childhood home. The athlete emphasized that the public often fails to recognize the personal struggles hidden behind a successful sporting facade.
