Cyprus commissioner addresses the 70th UN Commission on the Status of Women
The Commissioner for Gender Equality of Cyprus, Josie Christodoulou, represented the country and the EU Council at the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York. Accompanied by a delegation from the National Mechanism for Women's Rights, Christodoulou engaged in discussions regarding the importance of funding initiatives to combat violence against women. During the meetings, she emphasized that access to justice is a cornerstone for the full exercise of human rights for women and girls. On behalf of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council, she highlighted the necessity for coordinated legal, political, and technological action against cyber violence targeting girls. In national reports, Cyprus outlined reforms including a gender-sensitive budget, the establishment of a unified national database on gender-based violence, and improved support protocols for victims. Christodoulou also addressed the need to remove systemic, economic, and social barriers that hinder women's access to legal systems globally. She further noted that digital tools should be leveraged to improve access to legal information and support services, framing equality as a cross-sectoral policy priority.
