UN Security Council discusses the escalating crisis in Lebanon
On Wednesday, the UN Security Council held a session requested by France regarding the deteriorating situation in Lebanon, with support from Bahrain, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, and the UK. UN officials reported that violence between Israel and Hezbollah has caused nearly 977,200 internally displaced persons and the flight of approximately 17,700 people to neighboring countries. Cyprus emphasized its proximity to the region, with Ambassador Maria Michael confirming that President Nikos Christodoulides is in constant communication with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. Both Greece and Cyprus condemned Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel while acknowledging Israel's right to self-defense under international law. They expressed deep concern over the massive displacement of civilians and urged strict adherence to humanitarian law. Greece specifically called for the disarmament of Hezbollah and full implementation of UN Resolution 1701. Furthermore, Cyprus welcomed the Lebanese government's recent measures to restrict military activity and assert state authority.
