Iran's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains uncertain amid geopolitical tensions
Iran's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled for June 11 to July 18 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is currently uncertain. Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donya-Mali stated that the country would not participate due to the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during ongoing hostilities. Since February 28, the United States and Israel have reportedly conducted airstrikes on Iran, leading to significant casualties. Additionally, the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, expressed doubt regarding the tournament following the Australian government's decision to grant asylum to seven members of the Iranian women's national team. Iran was scheduled to play group stage matches against Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand in Inglewood, California, and Seattle. FIFA has not yet received an official notification regarding a withdrawal. Under FIFA regulations, an official withdrawal could lead to financial penalties ranging from 250,000 to 500,000 Swiss francs, with the governing body retaining the discretion to determine replacement procedures.
