High availability of recalled goods online reported by Cyprus Consumers Association
The Cyprus Consumers Association reports that 87% of products officially recalled or banned remain available for purchase online, citing a recent OECD report. Ahead of World Consumer Rights Day on March 15, the association highlighted that the 2026 theme will focus on product safety. European Safety Gate data for 2025 recorded 4,671 warnings, marking the highest number since the system's 2003 inception. This figure represents a 13% increase from 2024 and more than double the volume recorded in 2022. Additionally, national authorities executed 5,794 follow-up actions, a 35% increase compared to the previous year. The association attributes this heightened activity to the new General Product Safety Regulation, which improves information exchange across the EU and the European Economic Area. The organization has called for increased compliance to ensure safer consumer markets.
