UN Secretary-General Guterres visits Turkey during Ramadan
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has departed for Turkey as part of an annual tradition to conduct a solidarity visit during the month of Ramadan. During his stay, Guterres is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The discussions will address regional developments, humanitarian aid, and issues concerning the refugee crisis. The UN official, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, noted that the visit also aims to acknowledge Turkey's role in managing large numbers of displaced persons. Specifically, the UN highlights that Turkey hosts approximately 2.5 million refugees and asylum seekers, including over 2.3 million Syrian nationals. As part of his itinerary, Guterres will meet with representatives from non-governmental organizations working to support the refugee population. While the specific dates of his arrival and the duration of the visit remain unannounced, the trip serves as a diplomatic gesture of solidarity.
