New regulations for traffic camera fines in Cyprus

On 6 March 2024, the government of Cyprus implemented new regulations for fines issued by traffic cameras. According to Tasos Asikkis of the Traffic Department, the law now distinguishes between different types of red light violations to adjust penalty severity. If a vehicle crosses the stop line but remains within the pedestrian crossing area, the fine is reduced from €300 to €85, while retaining three penalty points. Entering the junction beyond the pedestrian crossing, or passing the white line where no pedestrian crossing exists, continues to carry a €300 fine and three penalty points. Violations of the mandatory stop line alone remain subject to a €25 fine without penalty points. These changes are not retroactive, meaning infractions recorded on or before 5 March 2024 will still be processed under the previous €300 penalty structure. The adjustments were officially approved by the Council of Ministers.
