European naval forces bolster security presence in Cyprus
Following a drone strike on a British military base at RAF Akrotiri, several European nations have deployed naval and air assets to Cyprus to bolster security. The Italian frigate Federico Martinengo arrived in Cypriot waters on March 11, 2026, carrying over 160 personnel, having departed from Taranto last week. The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle has also been positioned in the eastern Mediterranean to support regional defense efforts. Additionally, the Netherlands is deploying the frigate HNLMS Evertsen, and Spain is sending the frigate Cristobal Colon. Greece has contributed four F-16 fighter jets and two frigates, including the Kimon, while Turkey responded by deploying six of its own F-16s to the region. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten confirmed the deployment is limited in duration, with the ship expected to remain until early next month. President Nikos Christodoulides characterized these actions as a display of European solidarity intended to maintain regional stability.
