Greek entertainer and actor Giorgos Marinos dies at age 87
Greek performer, actor, and singer Giorgos Marinos has died at the age of 87. Born in Athens on June 18, 1939, he was widely recognized as a pioneer of the live variety show format in Greece. Marinos began his career in the early 1960s, notably performing in Manos Hadjidakis' 'Odos Oneiron' in 1962. Throughout his career, he combined theater, satire, music, and dance, becoming a prominent figure in the nightlife scene, most notably at the 'Medousa' venue between 1973 and 1992. In recent years, he had withdrawn from public life, and in 2024 it was revealed he was residing in a nursing home. Reports indicate he passed away on March 10, following health struggles. His death was announced publicly by media figures including Giorgos Liagas on March 11. He grew up raised by his mother, Vasiliki, and did not meet his father, Alexandros, until age 12 due to the latter's exile on Makronisos.
