Harvey Weinstein reports poor prison conditions and abuse at Rikers Island

Harvey Weinstein, currently serving a 16-year sentence for rape, has spoken to The Hollywood Reporter about his incarceration at the high-security Rikers Island facility in New York. The 73-year-old, who uses a wheelchair, described the conditions as hellish and stated that he is subjected to extreme isolation and frequent threats from other inmates. Weinstein claims he was physically assaulted by another inmate while waiting to use a telephone, resulting in facial injuries and bleeding. He stated he could not report the attacker due to the informal prison code, which he described as the law of the jungle. Since the autumn of 2024, Weinstein has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. His legal team previously expressed concerns regarding his treatment and health in December 2024. Authorities have denied his requests to be transferred back to a state facility, citing the need for his proximity to the court for upcoming proceedings. Weinstein was also convicted in California in 2022 for the rape of an actress and faces a retrial for another sexual assault charge.
