Cyprus customs intercept significant quantities of illicit tobacco products
Between March 5 and March 9, 2026, the Cyprus Customs Department conducted multiple operations against the smuggling of tobacco products. At the Agios Dometios crossing point, authorities apprehended several individuals, including Greek and Turkish Cypriot nationals, for attempting to transport cigarettes, heated tobacco, and shisha tobacco without required health warnings or tax stamps. Offenses were settled via out-of-court payments ranging from 300 to 650 euros, and vehicles used for transport were seized in some instances. Furthermore, on March 8, a 34-year-old Greek Cypriot was arrested at Paphos Airport with 50 cartons of cigarettes and 10 kg of rolling tobacco destined for the UK. He was remanded in custody by the Paphos District Court, and his trial is scheduled for March 20, 2026. On March 9, another individual was apprehended at Larnaca Airport attempting to smuggle 148 cartons of cigarettes to the UK. These seizures form part of a broader enforcement campaign against illegal cross-border trade.
