United Kingdom reinforces military presence in Cyprus

The United Kingdom has deployed a Merlin Mk2 helicopter to Cyprus to bolster defense against aerial threats following a drone strike on the island last week. This helicopter, transported from a naval air station in Cornwall, joins two Wildcat helicopters that arrived last Friday. British officials stated that the Merlin Mk2 provides early warning for incoming drones or missiles by monitoring high-altitude airspace. Additionally, a specialized engineering team has been deployed to assist with force protection. Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon will depart from Portsmouth for the region within the coming days. Prime Minister Keir Starmer originally announced the deployment of the HMS Dragon last week. While reports vary on the exact number of helicopters deployed, the Ministry of Defence confirmed that further aircraft beyond the initial two Wildcats are now on the island. The naval crews are currently preparing the warship for operation to support the existing layered defense strategy.
