Despina Miraraki describes her detention in Iran
Greek businesswoman Despina Miraraki recently discussed an incident from her past, during which she was detained by authorities in Iran. The detention occurred decades ago due to a violation of the country's strict dress code, specifically because a small portion of her hair was visible from beneath her headscarf. Under Iranian religious law, such a display could have resulted in a prison sentence of up to one year. Miraraki was held in a cell until the evening of that day. She was eventually released following an official reprimand, which she attributes to the intervention of her business associates and her status as a prominent entrepreneur. During the interview, she also noted the professional challenges she faced while working in the Persian carpet trade 35 years ago, describing difficulties in being recognized as an equal in a male-dominated business environment.
