Nathan Martin wins Los Angeles Marathon in record-breaking photo finish
The Los Angeles Marathon, established in 1986, concluded with a historically tight finish. American runner Nathan Martin, 36, crossed the finish line in Santa Monica with a time of 2:11:18. Kenyan athlete Michael Kimani Kamau recorded the exact same time, with race officials determining the winner by a margin of one hundredth of a second. Kamau, who holds a personal best of 2:08:19 from Shenzhen 2023, had maintained a lead for much of the race but suffered physical collapse at the finish line due to lack of hydration. Emergency personnel transported Kamau away on a stretcher following his collapse. Nathan Martin achieved the victory through a late-stage surge, marking a significant performance as an African American athlete with a personal best of 2:10:45. This finish is considered one of the closest in marathon history, exceeding the margins recorded in recent Tokyo and New York City marathons.
