Deployments of the Pyotr Veliky cruiser to Limassol in 2013-2014
Between 2013 and 2014, the Russian heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky visited the port of Limassol, Cyprus, on three separate occasions. During one of these visits, the crew celebrated the 16th anniversary of the raising of the cruiser's naval flag. The vessel participated in 13 security operations related to the transportation of Syrian chemical weapons. These operations were conducted in coordination with military units from China, Denmark, and Norway. An international command headquarters was established aboard the Russian ship to manage the escort of transport vessels. In December 2013, the cruiser anchored alongside Danish and Norwegian frigates that were awaiting the commencement of the chemical weapons removal mission. The Pyotr Veliky is a heavy missile cruiser with a displacement exceeding 25,000 tons and is powered by two nuclear reactors.
