German Foreign Minister visits Nicosia for security talks

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visited Nicosia on Tuesday to meet with his Cypriot counterpart, Constantinos Kombos, to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional stability. During the visit, Wadephul reaffirmed Germany's commitment to Cyprus, stating that they will be present if the island requires assistance amid current Middle Eastern tensions. The discussions addressed the impact of the regional crisis on energy prices, shipping, and supply chains. Minister Kombos emphasized that Cyprus acts as a bridge for humanitarian operations and maintains a neutral role focused on de-escalation. The meeting also involved consultations regarding the security of the island following an Iranian-made drone strike on the British base at Akrotiri. Furthermore, reports indicate that Wadephul was scheduled to meet with the UAE Foreign Minister, Abdullah bin Zayed, during his stay in Cyprus. The visit occurs as Germany deploys the frigate FGS Nordrhein-Westfalen to the region, contributing to an increased international military presence alongside other EU and NATO assets. Both ministers expressed a shared commitment to a strong Europe and praised the collaborative diplomatic approach to the unfolding geopolitical challenges.
