President Christodoulides addresses students on education and labor market needs
On March 9, 2026, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides addressed high school students in Larnaca during an event titled 'Cyprus at the helm of Europe: youth participation — democracy leadership'. He stated that the education system must prioritize critical thinking and improve professional guidance starting from the final year of primary school. The President argued that the current labor market in Cyprus does not require more lawyers and accountants, emphasizing the need to align educational outcomes with job opportunities. He noted that such measures are essential to ensure graduates find employment, earn living wages, and can afford housing and family formation. Christodoulides highlighted that the current fertility rate in Cyprus is 1.3 children per woman, which is below the necessary 2.1 threshold. To address this demographic decline, the cabinet is focusing on investments in education and healthcare. Additionally, the President expressed concern over the shrinking middle class and affirmed that the government is working on policies to stabilize and support this segment of the economy.
