President of the House of Representatives addresses women's representation in Cyprus
On the occasion of International Women's Day, the President of the Cypriot House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, hosted a breakfast for female ambassadors and heads of foreign diplomatic missions in Cyprus. During the event, Demetriou emphasized the necessity for women to advocate for democracy ahead of the upcoming legislative elections. She highlighted that current representation statistics are low, noting that only 8 out of 56 members of the Cypriot Parliament are women. The President also stated that female representation remains insufficient at the ministerial and diplomatic levels, both within Cyprus and internationally. Demetriou expressed concern regarding the lack of media coverage on women's rights issues in the Sunday press. The discussion aimed to identify actionable steps to improve women's rights and political participation. She concluded by stating that significant progress is still required to achieve gender parity in governance.
