United States mandates evacuation of consulate staff in Adana, Turkey
On March 9, 2026, the United States Department of State ordered non-essential government personnel and their families to evacuate the U.S. Consulate in Adana, Turkey, due to security risks. The Consulate has consequently suspended all consular services. Simultaneously, the U.S. Embassy in Ankara updated its travel advisory for southeastern Turkey to Level 4, "Do Not Travel," strongly encouraging American citizens currently in the region to depart. The advisory for the rest of Turkey remains at Level 2, "Exercise Increased Caution," with officials noting there has been no change to the overall national risk level. While the Department of State cited general security risks, some reports link these measures to rising regional tensions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran. The city of Adana is home to the Incirlik Air Base, which is used by NATO. The U.S. government maintains that these measures are strictly precautionary to ensure the safety of its citizens.
