Potential Lebanon-Israel negotiations in Cyprus

Lebanese political sources, citing initiatives attributed to President Joseph Aoun, report that a civilian delegation may be formed to engage in direct negotiations with Israel. Cyprus has emerged as the most likely venue for these talks, which aim to de-escalate tensions following the collapse of the November 2024 ceasefire. Since early March 2026, Israel has conducted over 500 airstrikes in Lebanon, while Hezbollah has launched drone and missile attacks, some reportedly targeting British facilities in Cyprus. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed he had a telephone conversation with President Aoun and did not rule out the possibility of hosting the talks. Meanwhile, the Cypriot government is increasing defensive measures, including plans to expand civil defense shelters. These diplomatic efforts occur amid heightened regional instability and reports of increased public support in Lebanon for the army's role regarding Hezbollah. President Christodoulides also noted that the security of Cyprus is a collective responsibility of the European Union, following the arrival of military equipment from European partners.
