Cyprus defense minister discusses regional security and threat assessment
On March 9, 2026, Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas stated that the Republic of Cyprus has not received any direct threats since the onset of regional instability. He clarified that any identified threats or evaluated security concerns have exclusively targeted the British military bases in Akrotiri rather than the Republic itself. Minister Palmas emphasized that the National Guard remains in a state of full operational readiness. The government is actively collaborating with international partners who have offered support and deployed forces to the region. Beyond ensuring citizen safety, the minister noted that authorities are focused on protecting critical infrastructure to maintain state functionality in the event of an escalation. The presence of Greek, French, and other foreign forces was cited as evidence of Cyprus's reliable standing with international allies. The minister urged the public to avoid forming incorrect impressions regarding the country's security status.
