Status of British sovereign base areas in Cyprus
High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Kingdom, Kyriakos Kouros, recently commented on the status of British military bases in Cyprus during an interview with Sky News. Established by the 1960 Treaty of Establishment, the Akrotiri and Dhekelia areas are defined by the United Kingdom as sovereign territories. However, the Cypriot diplomat noted that this sovereignty is functional rather than absolute, limited to military use as stipulated by the founding agreements. Critics argue that these bases function as a colonial legacy and potentially involve Cyprus in regional conflicts, such as the current tensions in the Middle East. While the UK maintains these areas for military operations, reports suggest that facilities and infrastructure, including the Troodos radar and road networks, are also utilized by external forces. The Cypriot government has faced scrutiny regarding the extent of military facilitation provided on the island. While the UK views the bases as fully sovereign, the Cypriot perspective emphasizes the limitations inherent in their legal and administrative status.
