German frigate FGS Nordrhein-Westfalen docks in Limassol

The German Baden-Württemberg class frigate FGS Nordrhein-Westfalen (F223) docked in the port of Limassol on Sunday morning. The vessel is part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Maritime Task Force and replaces the German frigate Sachsen-Anhalt, which concluded its six-month deployment in the Mediterranean. While official sources emphasize the ship's role in the UNIFIL mission and maritime security in the Eastern Mediterranean, media reports connect its presence to recent regional tensions, including a drone incident near Cyprus. Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis previously noted that Germany is assisting in preventative security measures alongside other European partners.
