European leaders reinforce support for Cyprus following regional instability
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola declared that Cyprus will never be alone, emphasizing that the security of Cyprus is synonymous with the security of the European Union. These statements followed a drone strike in the region, reportedly involving an Iranian-made drone targeting the British base at Akrotiri. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed that Greece provided initial military support, which was subsequently followed by other EU partners, including France and Italy, deploying naval assets to protect the island. A Dutch frigate is also expected to join a carrier strike group led by the French vessel Charles de Gaulle. Beyond military support, the Greek government has successfully repatriated 1,039 citizens from the region over a five-day period amid flight restrictions. Prime Minister Mitsotakis also noted that authorities are prepared to monitor potential economic consequences, such as energy price fluctuations. The leaders reiterated that these actions are purely defensive and aimed at maintaining regional stability. European officials also addressed the broader humanitarian situation in the Middle East during the plenary session in Strasbourg.
