Turkey plans deployment of F-16 fighter jets to northern Cyprus

Turkish media reported that the Turkish cabinet, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is discussing the deployment of six F-16 fighter jets to Ercan (Tymbou) airport in the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus. The acting director of the Turkish Cypriot civil aviation authority, Askin Meseli, stated that these aircraft were expected to arrive on Monday morning for security purposes. This move follows the recent regional escalation in the Middle East and a drone strike on Cyprus last Monday. Multiple nations, including Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, have also bolstered their military presence in and around Cyprus following the drone incident. Greece has deployed four F-16s to Paphos and two frigates, while France, Italy, and Spain have sent naval assets to the region. The United Kingdom has dispatched two helicopters and a destroyer to its bases on the island. Turkey maintains over 30,000 troops in the north, and this deployment is viewed as a significant change in the island's military posture. The international community and the Republic of Cyprus generally regard the Turkish military presence in the north as illegal.
