Firefighters attacked in Limassol as authorities investigate arson incidents
On Sunday, March 8, 2026, firefighters from the Monovolikos station were targeted by unknown individuals while extinguishing a waste and wood fire in Polemidia, Limassol. The fire was reported at 17:55 and controlled by 18:18, but attackers threw stones at the crew and their vehicle, causing material damage. No injuries were reported, and the perpetrators fled upon the arrival of police. Separately, two other fires occurred in the mountainous Limassol region: one in the morning between Omodos and Mandria, and another in the afternoon near Anogyra. The Omodos-Mandria fire burned three hectares of vegetation and required six fire engines to contain. Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis stated that the environmental conditions were not conducive to natural fire outbreaks, leading authorities to classify the mountainous fires as malicious arson. Police are conducting investigations into all incidents, and officials have urged the public to report any suspicious activity.
