Anti-war demonstrations held in Cyprus regarding British bases
Recent demonstrations in Cyprus have focused on opposition to the ongoing war and the presence of British military bases on the island. On Saturday afternoon, approximately 400 to 500 protesters marched from the PASYDY building to the Presidential Palace in Nicosia to demand the abolition of the bases. Concurrently, a separate group of about 20 activists held a symbolic protest at the Agios Nikolaos roundabout in Limassol. Organizations involved in the mobilization include ANATROPI, NEDA, BDS Cyprus, Genocide Free Cyprus, Far Right Watch, and Voices for Peace, represented by activists such as Markos Oikonomou. Participants voiced opposition to military cooperation between Cyprus, Israel, Greece, and the United States, calling for a neutral stance in the conflict. While protesters expressed concerns regarding the impact of international geopolitical interests on the region, local authorities have not reported major escalations during these events. Some reports indicate that evacuation procedures for the Akrotiri base were extended until Friday due to regional tensions.
