Police warn of video call scams targeting banking details
Cypriot police have issued a renewed warning regarding an ongoing fraud scheme where criminals pose as law enforcement officers. Using mobile communication applications, the perpetrators initiate video calls while displaying an official police logo as their profile image to gain credibility. During these calls, the fraudsters request personal identification details, credit card numbers, and access codes for bank accounts. The authorities have explicitly stated that they never contact citizens through these methods or via video calling platforms. Citizens are advised to ignore instructions from these callers and to refrain from sharing sensitive financial or personal information. Should a victim have already disclosed such data, they are urged to immediately contact their bank to block access and prevent theft. This warning serves as a standard precautionary measure to mitigate increasing phishing attempts against the public.
