Turkish defense minister discusses regional security and NATO role

In an interview with the newspaper Posta, Turkish Minister of National Defense Yasar Guler highlighted Turkey's strategic importance within NATO and European security architecture. Guler stated that Turkey remains an essential factor for stability and that disagreements within the alliance should be managed through dialogue. He noted that the United States is currently encouraging European allies to increase their defense responsibilities. Regarding Aegean issues, Guler reaffirmed that Turkey's stance is unchanged and that it will reject any unilateral actions perceived as restricting its access to international waters and airspace. The minister confirmed that there are no updates to the military rules of engagement for 2026. He further asserted the operational reach of the Turkish Navy, extending from the Mediterranean to the Baltic Sea. Additionally, Turkey is prioritizing advancements in cyber and space defense technologies alongside its established maritime security strategies.
