Cyprus strengthens regional cooperation amid ongoing regional instability

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the presence of European military forces in Cyprus acts as a preventive measure due to regional instability. He clarified that Cyprus is not currently targeted, noting that recent incidents affected only the British base at Akrotiri. On March 8, 2026, the Cypriot and Greek navies conducted a joint search-and-rescue exercise dubbed "Salamis-01/26" in the Mediterranean. The drill featured the Greek frigate Kimon, alongside helicopters from the National Guard and Cyprus Police. Deputy Spokesperson Giannis Antoniou confirmed that military assets from partners including France, Italy, and Spain are in the country to enhance security and facilitate potential non-combatant evacuations. The government emphasized that these deployments are temporary and aimed at de-escalation. Meanwhile, reports indicate heightened regional tensions, including drone strikes in Kuwait and reported leadership developments in Iran.
