AKEL General Secretary discusses Cyprus's role and geopolitical risks

Stefanos Stefanou, General Secretary of the AKEL party, recently addressed the stance of Cyprus regarding ongoing military conflicts. During events in Kornos and Nicosia, he emphasized that Cyprus should function as a bridge for peace rather than a launchpad for military operations. Stefanou reiterated the party's long-standing position calling for the removal of British military bases from the island to mitigate national security risks. He warned that the country is already facing economic repercussions, such as tourism cancellations and price hikes, due to regional conflicts. Referencing the 52-year anniversary of the 1974 coup and Turkish invasion, he argued that nationalism and fanaticism previously led to national catastrophe. He urged the government to develop a comprehensive plan to address these socioeconomic consequences. Stefanou maintains that military involvement will only increase the danger to the Cypriot people.
