AKEL General Secretary addresses Cyprus's security and regional conflicts
General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, recently spoke at several events in Nicosia and Kornos regarding Cyprus's foreign policy and security. Stefanou stated that the presence of British military bases in Cyprus makes the country a potential target for regional conflicts. He reiterated AKEL's long-standing position calling for the removal of these bases to prevent the island from becoming a staging ground for military operations. Addressing women's rights at events organized by POGO and PEO, he also highlighted the socioeconomic challenges faced by women. Stefanou emphasized the need for Cyprus to act as a bridge for peace rather than an active participant in war. Furthermore, he urged the government to formulate a strategy to mitigate the economic consequences of ongoing conflicts, such as the decline in tourism and rising costs. He also commemorated the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 events, including the coup and the subsequent Turkish invasion, stressing the importance of historical memory.
